DANNEVIRKE WINS FIRST B GRADE TEST
SEVERAL SOLO EVENTS COMPLETED. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, Last Night. The Band Contest was continued to-day in the Town Hail, the ghief item of interest being the playing of the first of the two test pieces by the B grade bands. ; • ■ The BB flat bass solo had originally 35 entries, but only about half of these .faced tho judge. Captain T. Herd. “The Hardy Norseman” was the selected test, and close competition .resulted. Tho winner proved to; bo ,L. Fogo (Kalkorai), 96 points. ,T. Rogers (St. Kllda), 95 points, wan .second, and T. Williams (St. Kilda), '9-1J points, third. In the euphonium solo, ‘T Capuletti,” there were 19 competitors, the judge being Mr. W. HalllWell. He said .the contest had produced some plajrera. of outstanding merit, there being 'about six between whom there was .not much to choose. The winner was D. Colvin (Wellington Tramways), 88 .points. The next five in order of .merit were: J. M’Cllntock (Woolston) S 7, L. Clayton (Wellington Tramways) 86, T. H. Hughes (Woolston) 84; J. Lowe (New Plymputh) 82 and A. Ramsay (Queen Alexandra’s) 80. ■ i In the tenor horn solo ("Carnival .of Venice”) the results were: L. S, Woods (New Plymouth iPoints 1, H. Riggs (Pt. Nicholson Silver) 98 2. In the tenor trombone ("Send Forth Tho Call”), /F. Croft (Wellington ‘Tramways) 87 points, was first and ,J. Marshall (First Southland Regiment) 85 points, second. . i In the H grade Bands’ test selection .first test. Dannevirkc was' first (£2O .prize), New Plymouth Citizens' second ,(£10). Fifth Mounted Oamaru, third ,(£5), and Invercargill Civic, fourth \ (£3). Seventeen bands competed. ;
