.TELEGRAPHIC INSTALLATION.. 560 WORDS A MINUTE. ‘ SYDNEY, February 10. , Bringing Australian telephony and telegraphy up to tho standard of .those in any other part of tho the carrier wave channel system haS been Installed between Melbourne and Sydney. In many respects, it Is claimed Australian systems are ahead. Tho installation of the carrier wave channel system marks a new era in Commonwealth telegraphy ' and telephony, for with this system 16 messages, eight In either direction, are tiansmitted over the same wire at the same time. In addition, a telephone conversation ig being conducted over the wire, too. The apparatus installed in both Sydney and Melbourne G.P.O.’a sends Impulses along the wire. These impulses are of varying strenght, and by the adjustment of Instruments which are at either end, so that each pair (ono in Sydney/and the other in Melbourne) are responding to the same degree of impulse .the number of telegraphic transmissions can be secured concurrently. And by the application of this method of most rapid transmission Is secured. Duple instruments, “teletype," . and the Murray multiplex instruments are in use at present, and 3 J words a minute are sent along each channel. Thus the new system of transmission enables a total of 660 words a minute, the one pair -Of wires serving the purpose of many metallic circuits under the old conditions. Further experiments are being carried out by the Director of Postal and Telegraphic Services,/with a view to the installation of other Instruments to give a greater extension and Increased number of transmissions over each circuit.
