WANGANUI MEETING CONCLUDES

Reremoana Wins Jackson Stakes Novar Scores in the Earle Stakes j \ ' Under pleasant weather conditions the Wanganui Racing •Club brought its Autumn meeting to a close on Saturday before a large crowd. It was unfortunate that the Club did not have the services of Mr. C. O’Connor at his .usual position, being taken ill with gastric influenza, it was found necessary to remove him to the hospital, and the starting had to be done by Mr. Price. Quite the most interesting race of the day was the meeting of the champions in the Jackson Stakes,»which resulted in a surprise victory for the veteran, Reremoana, the favourite, The Hawk being in third place. The public were a long time in sorting out the winners, but after they got going, were fairly successful, all the favourites but one getting home after the third race. Whenuanui, with all his weight proved himself capable of making a name for himself in open company, in which class he will race in future. For the meeting, the totalisator showed a deficiency of £16,104, which, considering the state of the money market at present, is not very remarkable. One unfortunate incident occurred in a splendid day’s sport. That was the injury sustained by the jockey, T. Bound, when his mount stumbled and threw him in'the first rase. His injuries were diagnosed as slight concussion, and he was removed to the hospital. Subsequent inquiries elicited the information that he was doing fairly well.

HOW THEY RAN. AN OUTSIDER GETS HOME. San Pedro failed to fulfil his engagement in the Okoia Hack, which left eleven runners in the starter’s hands. Great Day and Outfit were in great demand with the public, Captain Gazeley and Bent being the outsiders. Out of the barrier, Great Day was the first to show up, being closely followed by Lieutenant Bill, Bissac, Inoe, Kilmiss, Airtight Outfit, Bent. Capitulation, Blue Peter and Captain Gazeley, this being the order past the stand. Along the straight Blue Peter appeared to be stepping on the heels of Capitulation, and at % the turn stumbled and lost his rider T. '-Bound. On commencing the back stretch, the order was, Gre'at Day, Outfit, Captain Gazeley, Airtight, Kilmiss, Liautenant Bill, Capitulation., Bent and Bissac, with' tjie riderless Blue Peter following up the field. Outfit was in charge at the bottom turn, and led into the straight from Captain Gazeley, Capitulation, Lieutenant Bill, Kilmiss, Airtight, Great Day, Bissac, Bent and Inoe. Lieu* tenant Bill, commencing his run at the distance post, went to the front and stayed there to win by half a length from Outfit, with Kilmiss a short head away, third. Capitulation was fourth, while Captain Gazeley, and Inoe were close up, next, followed by Airtight, 1 Bent, Great Day, and Bissac together in a bunch. Far From The Public Choice. All started in the Autumn Handicap, and of tho nine runners, Glenross, in spite of his defeat on the first das wa s again installed a firm favourite, carrying £3OO more than Benzora, tho next in the order of favouritism. Star Area, who was eighth favourite, had £ISOO less of the public money to carry. The favourite got the worst of the stArt, Beaumont, , First Acre, Buoyant, Glengariff, Star Area, The Thorn, Hipo and Benzora, all leading the favourite past the stand. Round the back, The Thorn was in charge, with Glengariff and the favourite, who had made a forward move, lying next, followed by Benzora, First Acre, Buoyant, Beaumont, Star Area and Hipo. At the turn Glenross was still lying third, and Beaumont had dropped back to last. The order into the straight was The Thorn, Glengariff Glenross, Star Area, Benzora, First Acre, Buoyant, Hipo and ’ Beaumont The last-named commenced his run when the turn -was completed and at the distance was lying about fourth At this stage Star Area took charge, which he did not relinquish, and passed tho post three-quarters of a length ahead of Beaumont, who was two and a-half lengths ahead of Glengariff. Glenrpss was fourth, while tho rest arrived together close up to the favourite.

THE CHAMPIONS MEET. A WONDERFUL RACE. One of the best fields that has ever paraded for the Jackson Stakes was that which faced the starter on Saturday. The Hawk, who was unlucky on the opening day, was installed a firm favourite, carrying 1200 more tickets than Grand Knight, the next In demand. Lysander and Limited were evenly supported, while the outsider was Reremoana. At the post, Limited drew the rail position, The Hawk being next. Reremoana was on the outside. Until the straight wa# reached the race was always in doubt, the field being closely bunched together. Limited was the first to show daylight from a perfect start, The Hawk, Lysander and Grand XCnight and Reremoana following closely in that order. At the five furlong post, Lysander and Limited were together in the lead, The ' Hawk and Grand Knight were paired close up, while Reremoana was still last. A furlong further, Limited was in charge, Lysander hal fa length back, and the field in a bunch close up. Reremoana made a forward move at the turn and when the home stretch was reached was lying in second place, having replaced Lysander, The Hawk appeared to be shut in at the distance post. Reremoana forged ahead at this point, the position of the others being Lysander, The Hawk, Grand Knight, f Limited. Nearing the post, Limited: dropped further back, while the outsider kept on to win the race for the second... year in succession in 1-5 of a second faster than last year and a second slower than Gloaming’s time, which is the record for the race, Lysander was three-quarters of a length, away, second, and The Hawk a neck away in third place. Grand Knight . was fourth, while Limited came in last. •; y I Ardath—A Hot Favourite. Ardath was made a hot favourite in the Hurdles from which there were no defections, carrying over 1400 more tickets than Matu, who was the next to be fancied by the pubfic. Matu led the field out of the tapes, but at (ho first fence Gold Peak wag in charge from Ardath, Matu, Elvaette and Comedy Prince. At the bottom bend the field had spread out a good deal, no change eventuating in the field as they passed the stand. Going round the 1 top. Comedy Prince moved up into third place, Matu and Elvaette lying together a: length back. Down the back Gold Peak arid Ardath were still in command, while Comedy Prince had dropped back to last, three lengths behind Elvaette and Matu. On entering the straight Ardath had a commanding load and his backers were quite justified in going to the pay-out window as he had to fall over to lose. Matu, Gold Peak and Elvaette were next, while Comedy Prince was well back. The favourite got home five lengths ahead of Matu, who was a similar distance away from Gold Peak. Elvaette c?me in six lengths in front of Vl._ and last year’s winner came in well back, last. Damarls Wins By A Neck. Damans, in the absence of Melissa In the Juvenile Handicap was strongly fancied by the public. Thursday's winner was the only one to be deleted from the runners carded in the race. Ruanui had a goodly number of supporters, while the oilier two wore paying a big price to win. At the post, the start was delayed for some time by the fractiousnoss of the favourite. The delay did not prevent the start from being an excellent one, the first to get away from the field being Vigilance. Panther, Ruanui and Damarls followed behind in that order until the four furlongs post was reached. The order then became Vigilance, Ruanui, Damaris, Panther. Turning for home, Vigilance was still in charge from Ruanui and Damarls, paired, with Panther coming fast along the rails. At the distanc* Damarls had assumed command. Vigilance and Panther close up. second, with Ruanui last. Damaris remained in charge all along the run homo to win by a neck from Panther, who was making a bold bid for victory, Vigilance came in half a length behind, while Ruanui was two lengths further back, last.

Novar Scores A Popular Win. IPho three runners who finished in front of Novar in the Cup on Thursday being absent, it was not surprising; to find that punters were pinning their faith to the half-sister of Mr. MacKenzie’s champion. Neither was It surprising to find that their faith was rewarded. Mint Leaf and Nukumai were the next to be fancied. Mask also found plenty of supporters. The favourite was the first to show up from the field when the journey was commenced, but was soon replaced by Ngata. Entering the straight, Ngata was in . the lead from Opa, while Novar, Euphonium, Nukumal, Mint Leaf and Mask followed in quick suecession. Passing the stand, Opa and Ngata were prominent in the field. Nukumai, Novar and Mint Leaf together. Euphonium and Mask being paired last. Little change resulted along the back straight, nor was ther« any material change in the field whei the bottom bond was reached. Or entering the straight, Ngata had a slight advantage from Opa, Mint Leal was in third place, Nukumai close up the rest of the field being very evenly placed. At the distance the race looked very even, Opa, Ngata, Mint Leaf and Nukumai being in line, the others close up. Novar made a strong run and finished three-quarters of a length ahead of Nukumai, who was a head in front of Mint Leaf, with Opa close up. Mask, Ngata and Euphonium were the next to come home in that order. Whenuanni Again Scores. x In a field of ten runners! in the Matarawa Hack. King’s Folly, who defeated the Acre gelding, Whenuanul, on Thursday, was Installed first In the public choice, carrying oyer 3000 tickets between them. Ohui led out of the tapes from Sea Star. Whenuanui, Royal Elm, King’s Foby> Break-o’-Day, Orazone, Musket vein. Phitonu and Sky Point. At the turn, Ohui was still in the lead and Whenuanui had moved up into second place, Break-o’-Day. King’s Folly, Sea Star, Royal Elm, Musket Vein. Orazone, Paitonu and Sky Point. Whenuanui assumed command when tne home stretch was reached, witn Break-o’-Day. King’s Folly. Ohui lying next, and Paitonu coming away from the bunch fast. The Acre geldmg / left the field almost standing from the distance and won almost as easily as he did each day at Foxton, m spite of the extra weight he, bad to King’s Folly was three good lengths back, second,, while Paitonu came in two lengths behind, third Royal Elm, Break-o’-Day, Sea' Star, Orazone, Musket Vein. Ohui, and Sky Point came home next in that order.

Shirley Gets Home In 1.13 4-5. Civility, * Oration, and Benzora were the defections In the last race, 1 caviar eight runners to go into the starter; hands. Shirley was sorted out by tn public as the winner, while Roy Rec had a certain following on Gail lard The Tamatete -Tukia bracket got little support, and did not warrant even that; Tamatete, drawing number ent position at the barrier got away wel. and led Nadarino, Shirley, Deluge Gaillard, Tukia, Mlreusonta and 3Vlerr v Jest for about a furlong. Shirley am Nadarino then went to the front, am Tamatete went back to fourth place Commencing the turn for home. Nav darino led from Merry Jest Shirley Mircusonta. Deluge, Gaillard, Tuk. and Tamatete, which was the ordc until the distance post was reached Shirley then had a slight advantage from Merry Jest, with Mircusonta and Nadarino together close behind* Tamatete and Tukia had tailed off. Shirley stayed best to win by half a length from Merry Jest, who was a lengtn In front of Mireusonta. Nadarino was close up, fourth , Gaillard, Deluge, Tukia and Tamatete came in next m that order. the racing in detail.
