TORRENTIAL RAIN AT AUCKLAND

CITY’S WATER SUPPLY AFFECTED. SERIOUS BREAK IN PIPELINE. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Last Night Heavy rain, including a torrential downpour during a terrific thunderstorm early this morning, caused severe damage to the pipeline from the Waitakere dam, which is one of the two sources of water supply for Auckland City. There is a large landslip, which took out four! pipes, completely severing the connection. It is about ten miles from the city, and reports so far are meagre, but apparently the task of repair will be lengthy and difficult. The other source of supply is Mihotapu, on the other side of the range, where there a few small slips on the pipe track, but not serious, and this supply is not interrupted. There are also reports that portions of the railway line between Kumeu and Waimauku, about twenty-five miles from Auckland, have been washed away, but details arc lacking. Flood conditions are also reported on the northern roads. The weather in the city itself has been exceedingly wet. It prevented the New South Wales-Auckland exhibition tennis match being played yesterday ,and as rain is still falling at the time of telegraphing, prospects for the opening of the New Zealand Tennis Tournament to-mor-row ar-e dismal. Rain also interfered with the final training operations at Ellerslie, and the course is in .a very heavy state.
