Ancient Ceremony of Succession THRONE CANNOT BE VACANT [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Sunday, 7 p.m.) TOKYO, Dec. 34. [Official.] The Emperor Is dead. Prince Hirohito, aged twentyseven, lias succeeded his father, Yoshlhlto as Emperor, in order to observe the law which provides that the throne cannot be vacant. The ceremony of the transfer of •he three sacred treasures of which the Emperor is custodian, occurred automatically, Immediately after the physicians final announcement, first to the Regent Empress and family gathered at the Palace, and thereafter to Makino, the Lord Keeper of the Privy Seat and Privy Counsellor and Ministers of State, whose presence at the ceremony of transfer of the treasures is necessitated by Imperial /law. The fatal termination of the illness was so long anticipated, that tne minor details were pre-arranged for the removal of the Royal body along three miles of winding shore road through a succession of fishing villages to the station at Idsushl, whence it was entrained thlrty-elgm miles to Tokyo station fronting the Imperial palace grounds. Within a reasonable time, the now Emperor may command the attendance of the Imperial Councillors, Governmental dignataries and officials, probably at the Imperial palace, where with all ancient 'ceremony, the Emperor and Empress will ascend the ancestral throne, and His Majesty will announce that he will strive to glorify the virtues and follow the example of his illustrious ancestors. After that the Prime Minister will pledge the loyalty of his subjects to Hirohito and the Empire. [The Emperor Yoshihito succeeded his father Mutsuhito in 1912.]
king conveys sympathy. COURT MOURNING TO BE WORN. (Received Sunday 7 p.m) LONDON, Dec. 25. King George sent a message to Tokio, conveying sympathy with the Japanese Royal Family, and com xnanded that Court mourning be worn tor three weeks. Prince Chichibu, who was on the high seas, was informed of the news by wireless.
