THE PREFERENCE CLAUSE
KIWITEA COUNTY. SEEKS ITS ABOLITION. ‘T think every man shou! be on a fair and equal basis,” said Councillor L. . McLean in moving the following resolution at yesterday’s meeting of the Kiwitea County Council. “That this meeting of the Kiwitea County Council, representative of the producers of this district, takes strong exception to the Government in not abolishing the preference to Unionist clause which is detrimental to the best interests of the Country”. Continuing, Mr. McLean said that the clause had been responsible ror many hardships, and instanced the predicament of willing workers who were unable to obtain work because of their objection to unions. The clause did not make for efficiency and afforded protection to the loafer at the expense of progress. He certainly felt that the Government should take immediate steps to remove the clause and so give equal rights and opportunities for all workers.
Cr. D. L. Younger agreed that the time had arrived when the clause should be abolished. Cr. W. Hair considered that the clause was not British, and it wao high time it was wiped out. If was decided to forward the resolution to the Member of the District, with a request that it be brought to the notice of the Government.
