DESTROYED BY SOUVENIR HUNTERS

TREE PLANTED BY PRINCE An oak tree planted by the Prince of Wales, in Shibden Park, Halifax, on October 15, when he opened tne park, suffered so much at the hands of souvenir hunters who pulled twigs and leaves off it that an iron fence sft high was erected round it This, however, did not save the tree, for on Saturday morning it was found that someone had climbed the fence and cut off the top. The stump of the oak has been transplanted to Bellone, and a new tree has been put in its place. This vandalism is probably the result of a list for souvenirs. A few days before the Prince’s visit someone entered the park at night, overturned all the seats, threw some of them in the lake, cut adrift all the boats on the lake, and broke into some of the refreshment stalls. The park is of the natural type that would require a. large force of men to guard it adequately.
