MANCHESTER STREET SCHOOL

MONTHLY MEETING OE COMMITTEE. The committee of the Manchester street school met on Monday evening. Mr. H. Mclntyre presiding. The new playground was inspected by the committee, and it was decided to make a progress payment to the contractor. It was decided to inivtc the Mayor (Mr. W. E. Carthew) to address the children at the breaking-tip ceremony on Friday, when a short programme will be given by the children. The headmaster’s final report for the year was as follows: The attendance in the lower department of the school has been low during the month, caused by the prevalence of chicken-pox, measles and whooping cough. Thus the average attendance for the year will not bo above that of the first two quarters, 1.0., about 467. Since the examination, the number on the roll has decreased, being now 517. Inspector Law visited the school on December 1, for the purpose of holding the Proficiency examination. Of the sixty-two pupils who sat for the examination 55 obtained their proficiency certificates, while three obtained competency certificates and one endorsed competency. This result is very satisfactory indeed in a school of this size, and reflects great credit on the class teacher, Mr. W. H. McLean. The highest marks in the headteacher’s final examination were obtained by Margery Taylor, and, according to the custom of previous years, she has therefore won the honour of being Dux of the school. On account of the bad attendance keeping tho class examinations back, there was not enough time at the end of the year to prepare a school concert. This will therefore bo postponed till 1927, when a concert worthy of the school can be worked up. The committee congratulated Mr. Thurston and Mr. McLean on the results of the proficiency examinations.
