THREE YEARS’ PROBATION

Gordon Francis McDonald, alias Scambary, aged 17 years, appeared at the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday, charged with the theft of four suit cases and contents, valued at £54 4s fid, on divers dates between November 11th and £2nd. Accused pleaded guilty. Senior Detective Quirke, in suggesting probation, remarked that McDonald was really not a bad young fellow, but had been up against things. His mother had recently died and having no money, accused had removed the portmanteaux from trains standing at the railway station. When questioned by the police, ho had been very truthful and now realised tho seriousness of his position. Mr. Cooper, who appeared for accused, also suggested probation, and remarked that lack of parental control had been partly responsible for his downfall.
Mr. J. L. Stout, S.H., took the course suggested, the term of probation being set down at three years. He also imposed a condition that during that timo accused must not be out at night after 8 p.m., except in the care of his foster-brother. Restitution of property unrecovered amounting to £l7 5s Is to bo made at tho rato of £1 per month.
