NEW AERO ENGINE

USE OF CRUDE OIL. SUCCESSFUL TESTS. LONDON, Oct. 26. The first British aero engine to use crude oil intsead of inflammable petrol was successful in its preliminary tests at Beardmoro's works at Glasgow. The engine developed SoO to 950 horse-power, with 1350 revolutions a minute from six cylinders, as compared with 16 to 24 horse-power for an ordinary aero engine of similar power, which, according to Beardmore and Co., consumes 5 per cent, more fuel. The engine, which the chairman of the company. Lord Invernairn, expects to be responsible for big developments in flying, will go abroad when the tests are completed. Replying to a question why the Government did not purchase it, an official of the company said; "The Air Ministry apparently requires, all its money for machines, and has nothing for engines.”
