BOOKMAKERS REFUSE TO BET
EFFECT OF BRITISH BETTING TAX. RACEGOERS LEAVE IN DISGUST. [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received Thursday, 7 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 3. Unprecedented scenes occurred at Windsor, the bookmakers of Tattersail’s ring as a protest against the betting tax refusing to bet. A booing crowd surrounded a “bookie,” who was attempting to lay tho odds and he desisted. The majority of the racegoers disgustedly departed after the third race. The betting was carried on in smaller rings, but as Tattersall’s provides an official starting prices upon which course betting is based, all starting bets wore voided all over the country. Tattersall’s bookmakers passed a resolution refusing to bet to-morrow. Their action has aroused a controversy. Some critics declare it silly and wrong, but a leading bookmaker points out that tbo tax has greatly reduced the attendance at Windsor and there arc so few punters that tho bookmakers are unable to make a docent book. Tho risks of heavy losses arc over-great. Other fears that the Government will introduce totallsators if the layers persist in not wagering.
