RELEASE OF ERNE BAUME
STATEMENT BY P.P.A. DENIAL BY PRISON AUTHORITIES. [Per Press Association.! WELLINGTON, Last Night. A flat denial was given by the Con-troller-General of Prisons, Mr. Dallard, to-day to certain statements made by Mr. Howard Elliott at the P.P.A. meeting last night in regard to the case of Sidney Erne Baume, whose recent release from detention has been the subject of comment in regard to the treatment of the prisoner in gaol. Mr. Dallard said that Baume was not sentenced to imprisonment, but was ordered to bo detained in the Borstal Institution under the Prevention of Crimes Act 1924. Pending transfer to Waikeria, Baumo was taken to Wellington Terraco prison. Ho was sentenced on February 6 to be transferred, to Waikeria on February 10. It was not only the practice, but generally recognised as essential, that prisoners sentenced to reformative detention in Borstal Institutions, should bo kept apart from other prisoners whilo awaiting transfer. They were also allowed to keep their civilian clothes. On arrival, however, they-donned prison garb. No exception was made in the case of Baume who at no time received preferential treatment Mr. Dallard also points’out that )ie was not a member of the Prisons Board when Baumo’s release was determined on.
