EMPEROR OF JAPAN
HIS FIFTIT-TH HID BIRTHDAY. CELEBRATION OF THE EVENT. The official celebration of the 53rd birthday of the Emperor Yoshihito of Japan was fixed for yesterday, but In Auckland the event -was marked by the flying of the Japanese flag from the Consulate, the office of Mr. A 13 Robertson. Port Street, on Saturday. Official calls were paid by the Mayor. Mr. G. Baildon, and the acting-town clerk,, Mr. J. Moiling, and by the Consuls of the countries represented in the city. Calls were also made by a number of other citizens. The Emperor was born on August 31, 1373, but the official celebrations of bis birthday are not held until October Yoshihlto is the 122nd I Emperor of Japan and was the third living- son of the Emperor Mutsohito (Moiji). He. was proclaimed Crown Prince on November 3 1 J>S9, and ascended the throne on July 30, 1912, but ids enthronement did not take place until ‘November, 1915, when the nation was en fete for seven days. In IS9O Japan had been converted from an absolute into a constitutional monarchy. The Emperor in May, 1900, married PrinccSs Sadako, daughter of Princess Kayo. They had four children: Prince I-lirohito, born on April 29, 1901, and proclaimed Crown Prince on September 9, 1912, who married Princess Nagako in 1924; Prince Chicchibu Yasuhito, born in June, 1902, who is serving in the army; Prince Takamatsu Nobuhito, born In January, 1905, who lias adopted a naval career, and Prince Sum! Takahito, born in December 1915.
The Emperor has for long been an invalid, and in consequence was unable to carry out his intention of making an extensive tour abroad, but Prince Hlrohito, visited Europe In 1921. After lus return ho was in November, 1921, appointed Regent in consequence of the serious illness of his father, who suffered from mental trouble. Since then two attempts have been made on the Crown Prince’s life. In 1926, Prince Chicliibu made a tour in Europe, -and spent some time in England, but had io cut short his visit owing to the state of the Emperor’s health. In May it was reported that His Majesty had had a slight attack of cerebral homorrhage_
