N.Z.'s Leading Stock Exhibition

Manawatu Show Gates Open To-Day BIG INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION The long:-awaited Spring Show has arrived and punctually at 9 o clock this inorning the gates will be thrown open to the general Public. If only the clerk of the weather is in genial mood, tho'.’.prophecy of record attendances on each of the three da-ya will 'bo fully realised. The Manawatu A. and P. Association for years has held the honour of staging the largest and most complete agricultural and industrial exhibition in the Dominion and the present Show promises to break all past records.- That is an ambitious statement, but the fact remains that entries are considerably above other years and ..all available space in the halls has been filled. Yesterday the stall holders were busy arranging their stands and the stewards hard at work displaying the exhibits in tho Various sections in order to get everything in readiness for the opening to-day. The live stock are not due to be ready, for judging until 9 a.m. tomorrow’, yet quite a largo number of animals are already in their pens. To-day’s programme is as follows; 91 a.nx.—Exhibition of machinery, motors, implements, permanent stalls, vehicles, etc; judging homo industries, needlework, photography, and art sections ,etc. 12.30 p.m.—Judging thoroughbreds and trotters. 1 p.m.—Judging pigs. 1.30 p.m.—Maiden jumpers’ competition and wire jump. 6 p.m,—Show Grounds closed to public.

TECHNICAL school work. A display made by the Palmerston North Technical School in the Produce Hall is one of the features Of the Show. To the layman who la jot acquainted with what is accomplished at the institution, this exhibition of pupils’ works is a • veritable - eyeopener. Apart from the splendid workmanship displayed, the most striking feature of the exhibits is their wide range. Ah endeavour has been made to stage a sample of .tbj work of all the' trade and Industriu. classes, carpentry, joinery, plumbing, dressmaking, cookery and so on. Thus one sees bottled fruit that whets the appetite, side by side with summer frocks that would please the most fastidious of maidens, while specimens hr carpentry and joinery - hobnob with tools and engineering contrivances. It is hard to believe that the exhibits are the work of the pupils themselves, yet such is the case, and their excellence reflects great credit upon the various Instructors. Public Schools’ Division. Commenting upon the school work, Mr Espincr said;—• “On the whole the quality of the work shown was in advance o' that of last year. Most of the exhibits were good and a largo percentage excellent .especially in the classes writing for pupils under 12 and writing for pupils under 13. It would bo well if the conditions attaching to the writing class (National Anthem, pupils under 10) were more definite, as It Is almost impossible to compare exhibits showing large hand, where the pupil has tho benefit of the ruled lines of the foolscap, with exhibits showing smaller writing whore the pupil must exorcise his judgment in preserving uniformity;-' in height. Exhibitors might note that faint writing, either with pencil or ink, docs not lend itself to exhibition purposes. The stewards would be spared a dead of unnecessary work, and possible injustice to exhibitors would be avoided if greater caro were exercised in forwarding the cxhiibts. Each parcel should show clearly on the outside the various classes of exhibits which it contains. As it is. writing exhibits arc found sandwiched between mapping, drawing and needlework without anything to indicate what is there. It Is obvious that those exhibits should ’bo handled as little as possible before judging takes place. Consequently, the writing'- stewards are chary about opening a parcel that shows no indication of its containing writing exhibits. Another source of trouble is the entering of a pupil in one class and forwarding an exhibit for a different class. The stewards Check the exhibits with the catalogue, and there is always the poshibility of an exhibit being discarded in the class shown by the catalogue. . Sometimes exhibits, are forwarded from pupils that have not been entered. This necessitates a scrutiny of the official file, with the inevitable result that the exhibit has to be discarded. “In carton modelling some very good work was exhibited, but the competition was confined to a few schools." COMMENTS. In hia comments upon the drawing exhibits, the judge (Mr G. H. Elliott) remarked that a large number o( non-entrants had sent in work, much ot which was of merit. There had been a mistake somewhere and it was to bo regretted. The mapping was good in part, but some, of the exhibits were bad both in colouring and lettering. Not one of the maps would come up to the quality ot previous years. The drawings generally wm.ro up to standard. In the lower classes however, there was a tendency t<) neglect proportion, which was really more important than shape. On the other hand, in the design section, there was a distinct attempt at something original, which was very pleasing. Very little copy work was noticeable. It was to he regretted that there, had been almost a universal misunderstanding ot what direct brush interpretation meant. The general idea seemed to be that the designs could bo first pencilled in and then coloured. That was not right, aril because many had first used the pencil, their exhibits had unfortunately to he disqualified. Another class had been devoted to a design based on a New Zealand plant, yet a number of competitors had adopted exotic plants and consequently had to be passed over. The children showed a splendid appreciation of design 'all round. Mr Elliott made special mention of two pen and ink drawings .those of Masters Abe Penman and Neilson Rees, both pupils or Central School. They were excellent. Generally speaking, the work ot Standards 1 and 2 was fair: Standard 3. good; Standards 4 and 5. very good; and Standard 6, excellent.
