The weather was boisterous with light drops of rain fm* the Flemington races. There was a large attendance, including the Governor-General and State Governors. Several New Zealanders were present, also Members or the Parliamentary Delegation. Cairncross was sixth early in the race, and only won the Malden narrowly. The rider, Jones, and the trainer, Fisher, also won this race last season with King of Oude. Royal Feast finished fast in the Maribyrnong Plate, and scored brilliantly from the pacemaker Euston. McCarten rode the winner, who cost 700 guineas as a yearling. In the Melbourne Stakes Manfred was second early in the race, but ran to the front in the straight and won without being extended. There were seven starters. Ram - pion went to the front at the start, and led out of the straight from Dpilogue, Thracian and Valaisiun, with Limerick sixth, and Karon a bad last. At ten furlongs Epilogue joined Lain - pion in the lead, the order of tno others being much the same. Epilogue headed Rampion at the mile, with Thracian and Valasian nearest of the others, including Limerick, with Karon still in the rear. At five furlongs Epilogue had a slight lead from Hampton, then came Thracian and Limerick. Epilogue and Rampion were together in the straight, with Limerick and Thracian next. The latter challenged the leader, but was beaten by three quarters of a length, with Limerick lEs lengths away, third. Raron was fourth, then Epilogue and Cromwell, Valasian was last. Time 2.321. Rampion was always prominent, but was hard pushed to win the Derby from Heroic’s brother Thracian, Limerick, finishing well, was a good third. The time is the second best for the race. This is Cracknell’s first Victoria Derby mount. Rampion has now equalled Manfred's record, by winning both Derbys. CANTALA STAKES. Amounis 9.S (J. Toohey) .. 1 Prepostcrer, 7.12 (A, Cooper) 2 Gothic, 8.1 (A. Reed) . . .. 3 Eighteen starters. Postscript was fourth. Won by half a length and long neck. Time 1.372. This was a reat race. Amounis finished strongly and won brilliantly. This is Amounis’ fourth win in the last five starts. HOTHAM HANDICAP. Bccdos, 7.3 1 Piastoon, 7.12 2 Our Prince, 7.8 3 •Nine starters. Spcarer was fourtn. Won by two lengths and half a hcaa. Time 2.33. Bcedos was second to last at the turn, but finished with a good run and won handsomely. He is engaged in the Cup at 6.7. Spearfclt has drawn the place on the rails for the Cup s’ixrt, Royal Charter being next, and Manfred near the outside of the field.
