ARTIST MODELS
PRESENT' DAY STANDARD. NOVELETTE TYPE DEAD. “The present-day artists’ model Is usually a well-bred type of girl, quite different from the type pictured by the Victorian writer. The artist of today is a busy man, who has not the time to spare to live the Bohemian life such as Murger and other French novelists depicted,” said Mr. G. P. Catchpole, secretary of the Facnlty of Arts, London, in an interview with the “Daily News.” “One girl who poses for her schoolgirl complexion is a cinema actress; a second is an artist herself; a third Is the daughter of a well-known painter; and a fourth is a South African girl of good family. “Slim, youthful figures, arc now the most in demand for girls. Artists, too, prefer models with long hair. These ■are rare these days—about one in ten—hut it docs no,t matter, as hair can bo more easily painted in than form. •‘Men well developed, but not overdeveloped, are popular as models, and are being painted more than before. Boy models arc the most difficult to find. “Intelligence counts more in a model than good looks. It a model docs not see the idea of an artist at once, however good-looking she may he, he will send her away. By far the most work an artist’s model docs to-day is for commercial purposes, a good commercial artist employing a model for every subect, even for illustrations for stocking and shoe work. We even have models special, ising in legs.” The pay of an artist’s model varies from 2/6 per hour upwards. The extent of this employment field is shown by the fact that over 200 sittings took place in the Faculty of Arts Gallery, apart from sittings arranged in artists’ own studios.
