BODY IN CORNFIELD
FRENCH GIRL'S FATE ~V MYSTERIOUS MURDER A mysterious murder, which the assassin appears to have tried to conceal by fire, has been discovered at Fresnes-sur-Marne in a field adjouning the high road between Meaux and Paris. Two gendarmes, passing along the road, noticed that a pile of cornsheavos was on fire, and, having given the alarm, they set to work to prevent the flames from spreading over the whole field. When the pile of sheaves were burned out. however, they discovered lying among the ashes the body of a young woman fashionably dressed, who had evidently been strangled after having been stunned by a blow on the head.
Inquiries made in the surrounding district enabled the police to identify the girl as the companion of a middleaged man with whom she was making a. motor trip, but her name is not yet known. An hotel-keeper, whose establishment is situated not very far from the scene of the crime, uas described the girl and her companion, who dined at his house on Friday night, and then left in an enclosed motor ear. During dinner, the woman got into conversation with the hotel-keeper and. speaking in her provincial accent, explained that she was a native of the Lot Department. Her companion seemed annoyed, and contradicted her, saying that she was native of Mile, at tho same time rebuking her for talking too much. The man and woman seemed to bo on very familiar terms, at)d in their conversation made several references to motor trips they had taken together. After dinner they left, both apparen - ly in good spirits and on cxcellen terms. The hotelkeeper recalls that during his conversation with the woman, she mentioned that Friday being the thirteenth of the month was a most unlucky day. and added that a fortune teller she had recently consulted had told her that, she was soon to meet a violent death. This prediction was fulfilled within a very short time of hfT tolling it. Apart from t* lo cscription furnished by the hotelkeeper the police are without any clue as to the identity of tho woman and her companion or tho motive for the crime. _
