[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Last Night,
"Would the Court like to hear why wo have round accused not guilty?" ■asked the foreman of the jury in the Supreme Court after returning their verdict in Ihc case of a young Maori charged with false pretences. "f don’t care to hear anything,” replied Mr. Justice Herdinan. “X can't understand it, that is all. You may go to lho back of the Court." Accused was Ta Taara and ho was charged with obtaining at Kaiwaka the sum of £l7 from Thomas Vincent NulSford through his agent by falsely representing that ho was authorised to obtain a loan on behalf of his mother.
Accused told the jury he was a follower of Katana and in pursuance of their belief in the principles of peace and goodwill towards all men lie would not contradict the evidence of witnesses. He was willing to accept the judgment of the Court in this case in atonement for the sins of his past of which the Court knew nothing. He added that the trouble was really a family one and he hoped his mother and father would forgive him for the trouble he had caused.
