ARGENTINE AFTER MUTTON TRADE. MEAT BOARD CHAIRMAN'S WARNING. [Per Press Association.] MASTERTON, Last Night. Mr. Forsyth, London manager for the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, addressed a meeting of producers in Masterton to-day on marketing and general conditions at Home. Ho strongly stressed the importance of jealously guarding the standard of quality and paying particular attention to the growing of the right type of carcase required, and to grading. The Argentine, whose mutton was laughed at a few years ago, was making a big effort to improve the quality and was also developing lamb production. After thawing out, however. New Zealand meat was better finished. The Board had been closely watching the handling of the meat and tho unloading of all New Zealand meat waa done under the supervision of the Board’s inspector.
Mr. Forsyth elaborated on tho excellent quality of Argentine chilled beef and declared that it would be a doubtful proposition for New Zealand to enter this trade. Chilled beef had to bo consumed soon after arrival, hence tho supplies to tho market had to be judged to within a few hundred carcases per week. Ho considered that the trade with West of England ports could not develop owing to lack of distributing facilities, and ho mentioned tho case of one Now Zealand company which consigned 29,000 carcases to a West of England port, 75 per cent, of which had later lo be railed to Smithfield for sale.
