DISCRIMINATION AGAINST BRITISH SHIPPING

Dominion Labour Attacked! [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] LONDON, Oct. 13. The Chamber o£ Shipping is presenting to the Imperial Conference a memorandum in which it attacks the Dominion’s discrimination against British shipping. It says; “Dominion Labour's interference with the terms of the engagement of crews in Britain causes trade frequently to be transferred to foreign (ships paying far lower wages. The ship owner's recognise that Labour is responsible, but the Governments concerned appear to regard Labour interference with British ships with far less gravity than interference with foreign vessels. The Governments do not give British shipping the same protection that they give foreign shipping.” The memorandum also attacks State • enterprises’ immunity from taxation which it states is an anomaly that should be abolished wherever it exists because it is unjust to private enterprise, uneconomic to the States and generally disturbing to commerce.

REPAIRS AT ROTTERDAM. FREMANTLE, Oct. 14. Mr. G. N. Scales, manager director of the New Zealand shipping firm of that name, who is a passenger by the Mongolia, says that an amazing amount of repair work to British ships is being done at Rotterdam. Mr. Scales said that British «hipbuilding was not entirely stagnant nor was tne. outlook exceedingly bright, but It was probably a sign of returning prosperity that the latest return of ships under construction showed a preponderance of new tonnage for Britain.
