MATERNITY HOSPITAL
GOVERNIMENT GRANTS ADDITIONAL SUBSIDY. PLANS OP BUILDING TO BE PREPARED. Another step towards the erection o£ a public maternity hospital in Palmerston North was taken by the Hospital Board yesterday, when, on the motion of Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., tho secretary was instructed to frrite the Health Department and ask them to prepare plans for the hospital at a cost of £BSOO. > “We promised the people that after tho end of tho financial year, wo would commence tho construction of the building,’’ added Mr Nash. Tho chairman, Sir Jas. Wilson, also made an important announcement in connection with the financial side of the new hospital. Ho said that through the efforts of Mr Nash tho Government had agreed to a 24s subsidy on the money that the people of Palmerston North and district had collected for the St Helen’s hospital and which had since been handed over to tho Board for the proposed institution. It will be remembered that when tho Government contemplated building a St. Helens Hospital in Palmerston North they promised 24s in tho £1 as subsidy on all moneys collected. The St. Helens proposal, however, fell through, and when the Board’s proposal was mooted the Government ,-would only contribute 20s in the £l. Mr Nash approached the Government urging that the original subsidy of 24s should be adhered to, and his recommendations have now been agreed to. As a re--suit £7OO, representing the difference between the 20s and 24s subsidies, has been handed over to the Hospital Board.
