GERMAN CHURNS FREE OF DUTY
DENIAL BY MINISTER OF CUSTOMS. POLICY OF DEPARTMENT. [Per Press Association.] ' CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Speaking at the opening of the Industrial Corporation Conference today. Hon. W. Downio Stewart said that in spite of what the President of the Corporation had said about German churns coming into the country free of duty, the speaker believed that no churns had come in, though an attempt had been mado to introduce them. The idea of putting no duty on imported churns was to help the dairying industry, and before any altera-
tion in the list was made, the industry would have to bo consulted, to make sure that it would not be placed at a disadvantage. The subject could ■well como up when the tariff was revised next year, and the close co-op-eration of dairymen was essential. The tariff list should bo revised periodically, and not tampered with year in and year out to the general upset of the importing business.
'i’hc Customs officers had an extraordinarily good idea of the industries of the Dominion, and the speaker favoured for next year, a tariff board with personnel tho same as in 19 21, with tho addition of a representative of the Department of Industries and Commerce. With the tariff list, the speaker’s policy had been to nibble where opportunity occurred. Ho had observed what he believed to be the feeling of tbe country in having put recently a duty on American motor-cars, to give the motor body-builders in New Zealand a chance.
