TO DEAL WITH FLOOD NUISANCE INCLUSION OF FEILDING SOUGHT. Arising out of the flooding caused by the Makino and Mangaone streams overflowing, the following petition was presented at yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council: —• "We, the undersigned, request your Council, lo taka control of tho Makino and Mangaone streams, and raise th c money that is required to carry out any work that is necessary, by way of strengthening the Makino, and also of cleaning out of all growth and other obstructions in the Mangaon c stream. Wc suggest a special rating area in the Ml. Stewart Riding, and the boundary of such area should be lo take in land that drains into tho Makino and Mangaone streams, and we would specially mention the Feilding Jockey Club’s property and also thc A. and P. .Association properties, and we think that tho Feilding Borough should also bo brought in tx a contributing body, as practically thc whole of the Feilding Borough drains into the Makino stream. Trusting th 0 Council will give tho request your serious consideration, wc aro, etc.—B. Gray, W. A. Moyle, A. J Head, R. Ross, W. Kentoul and D. Kingston. Cr Reid reported that the settlers had approached him on the subject, and he had suggested that the settlers do the work themselves. However they had decided to apply for a special rating district.

"We cannot possibly do the work,” said Cr. Fagan. "We arc not a drainage Board, and w 0 could not do the work with our present staff. The only way out of it was for the settlers to form themselves into a Drainage Board.”

The County clerk (Mr. Drew) pointed out that the Council had no power to cite the Foil ding Borough. The County could not possibly deal with th e situation. Following a brief discussion, it was decided to advise the petitioners that the County could not take the stops suggested, and suggesting ■ that the ratepayers form themselves into a drainage board to deal with the subject.
