His Honour Mr. Justice Reed and Mrs. Reed, Mr. and Mrs. Gamble and Mr. Hannay, of Wellington, and Colonel Symes, Napier are at present staying at the Grand Hotel. At the Ladies golf committee meeting yesterday afternoon, a vote of sympathy was passed .to Mrs. J. B. Wither, in the death of her daughter. Miss H. Porter, a member of the Club. The death occurred on Sunday, at Wanganui, of Mr. Herbert Bernard Watson, second son of the late Mr. Hubert Watson, and formerly' a master at th c Wanganui Collegiate School. Miss Currie has been appointed temporary assistant at thc West End school until Mr. T. H. Attwood, of the Terrace End school, commences duty there in the place of Miss G. E. Jamieson, who has been transferred. Advice has been received by Mr. P. G. Dawson, of Campbell street, Palmerston North, that he h as been awarded certificates for piano tuning and repairing, by the Jubilee Institute for the blind, Parnell, Auckland. The Prime Minister (Right Hon. J. G. Coates) and the Minister of Public Works (Hon. IC. S., Williams) will leave on Saturday next for Christchurch to bo present at the opening of the Lake Coleridge supplementary power station.

Mr. William Bourke, chief divisional passenger clerk in the Railway Department at Wellington, has retired on superannuation after 40 years’ service. Thirty.five years of this period were spent in the accountants’ branch.

Captain A. J. L. Whyte, R.E., aide-de-camp .to the Governor of Hongkong is at present on furlough in Now Zcland, Ho anticipates leaving Wellington for Sydney on August 6 and will return to China after spending a month in Australia. Mr. A. Hepburn, manager of the Auckland branch of the Dunlop Rubber Company, has been transferred to Wellington to take up a similar position, Mr. P. A. Richards, formerly in the head office, Melbourne, succeeds Mr. Hepburn at Auckland.

News has been received in Wanganui of the deat at New Plymouth Monday morning of Mr. Ralph Collins. Mr. Collins lived ofr twentylive years in Wanganui, and after his retirement from the East Town workshops made him home at New Plymouth. Mr. L. C. Friend, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Napier, loaves to-day for Sydney to take over the managership of the Sydney branch for three months. During his absence Mr. W. Brodio, senior relieving manager, will manage the Napier branch of the bank.

Mr W. Philip, of Palmerston North, took up his duties on Monday as headmaster of the Koputaroa School. Mr. Philip was for some years headmaster of the Tokomaru School, but owing to ill-health resigned. During the past three years he has been farming at Shannon and Palmerston ’North.

The resignation of Mr. W. E. Presnell from the West End School Committee, because of his wife's illness, was accepted with regret at the monthly meeting of the committee last evening, and it was decided to thank him for his many years of service. Mr. W. B. Bodell was appointed to take Mr. Presnell’s place. Mr. M. J. Ryan, of Paekakariki, has replaced Mr. T. Murphy on the Palmerston North railway staff. Mr. Murphy has been appointed to Cross Creek, Wairarapa. The vacancy on the staff caused by the transfer of Mr. W. F. Harding has been filled by Mr. E. L. Rea, who arrived from Auckland yesterday. Word was received in Palmerston North yesterday of the death of Mrs Overton, wife of Mr. G. E. Overton, late headmaster of the Terrace End school and now inspector of schools in Nelson. Mr. Overton’s many friends will deeply sympathise with him in the particularly sad circumstances surrounding his bereavement. Captain G. Bruce, Captain A. Hooper and Lieutenant S. Gibbons arrived at Wellington yesterday by the Maheno. They arc three soldiers of the Indian Army ,and have come to the Dominion for a period tinder a system of exchange now in vogue. They will assist the Defence Department at Palmerston North, Canterbury and Wellington respectively .
