MEN'S COMPETITIONS OPEN.

UNITED DEFEATS HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS.

The first round in the senior competition under the auspices of the Manawatu Hockey Association was played on Saturday, when United defeated High School Old Boys by five goals to three. Rongotea, the only other senior team at present, had a bye. Shortly after the game opened, Jensen secured a goal for Old Boys. United then pressed and Vic Turner scored from a scramble in the circle. —Old Boys 1, United 1. Up and down play followed, Anderson adding one to United’s total and Hoar scoring for Old Boys, making the teams two all. Desultory play took place during the next few minutes until Wilcox, the United right wing, took the ball through in good stylo and placed it in the net. —United 3, Old Boys 2. In the course of the next few minutes Stewart added two to United’s score. —United 5, Old Boys 2. Even play followed and half-time found the positions of the scores unaltered. United attacked when the second spell opened. Old Boys then assumed the offensive and kept the opposition men busy. The game from then on was much more interesting, and very oven, Old Boys, who had been playing two men short, having been brought up to their full strength. Just before the whistle sounded Jensen scored for the losing team.— United 5, Old Boys 3. Mr P. Amos controlled the game. OUTSIDE RESULTS. 1 ' Wellington.—Senior A: Wesley (4), Wakatu (2). A challenge is to be sent by Wairoa (Gisborne to the Ruahine Association (Dannevirke) for the Lady Carroll Challenge Hockey Shield. HOCKEY CLUB AT LONGBURN. A meeting was held at Longburn on Friday evening, when a ladies 'hockey club -was formed. It was decided, however, not to affiliate and take part in the Palmerston North competitions until the players had indulged in practice. Officers were elected as follows: Patron, Mr. R. Tanner; president, Mr. F. S. Birch; vice-president, Mr. C. C. Lillis; secretary. Miss Birch; treasurer, Mies Mabey. The first practice will be held on Wednesday.
