A shocking accident occurred at the Cheltenham railway crossing, when five occupants of a motor-car were killed. VVhen the car was approaching the crossing it was raining hard and all the curtains were closed. As the crossing gates were open the car was driven confidently ahead. When it reached the middle of the down line, a train from Adelaide to Port Adelaide crashed into it. There were three women and two men in the car. All the bodies were mangled beyond recognition; and the names have not yet been definitely ascertained. They are thought to be all members of the Caire family, of Port Adelaide. ENGINE DERAILED IN PULLING UP. SAW CAR ONLY 10 YARDS OFF. (Received Sunday, 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 2. Tile victims of the Cheltenham level-crossing smash were:— John Caire. Mrs. Bertha Caire, wife of the former. Clifton Caire. Mrs. Clifton Caire. Iverna Cairo. The police failed to find the gatekeeper after the smash and they consider, as the bodies are so mangled, that he might be one of them. The fact that the gates were open indicates that he was on duty shortly before the crash. The engine-driver and fireman state that neither saw the car till they were ten yards from it, but then it was too late to avert the accident. They applied the brakes and pulled up in fifty yards, the engine and two following cars being derailed.
