WESTERN UNITED ROMP HOME, DANNEVIRKE GOES DOWN 25—5. The Western United thirds met Dannevirke at Terrace End Park yesterday and had the best of the game throughout, romping home to victory with a score of 25 to 5. The home team lost the toss and kicked off against the wind. The forwards quickly brought play on the visitors’ goal-line, where a five-yard scrum resulted. Cox (half-back) secured the ball whipped round the blind side to score a neat try. Pegler failed to convert.

The home forwards proved faster in the loose work, and play was mainly in the visitors’ quarters, but the defence fyeld good. . The Dannevirke pack made a rush to the goal posts, where, in the melee, Brown picked up the ball to score. Drinkwater had no difficulty in giving Dannevirke a lead of 5—3. Shortly afterwards Hutchins (United) with a splendid run from past half-way, scored near the posts. Hemi converted, making the score B—s8 —5 ' in favour of Western United before interval was called. 1

Shortly after the resumption of play, the red forwards brought the play to th e visitors’ twenty-five, where Cox, after beating several opponents, scored a splendid try. Ormon,j failed to add the additional points. The reds kept up the attack. The for-' wards and backs in turn made assaults anti Peglcr, receiving the ball near th e twenty-five, passed to Finlay, who scored, but Hemi failed to convert, and the score read Western United 14, Dannevirke 5. Two minutes later Robb broke through near the twenty-five and scored under the posts and Ormond had no difficulty In making th e score 19—5. Another red fprward rush saw Tuck scramble over. ' Ormond, after a goo<j run a littl e later, passed the ball to Hemi, who again scored, giving the feds the lead to the extent of 25 to 5, when time was called.
