AWAPUNI IMPROVEMENTS

PROPOSED >t ;w road to racecourse. The secretary of the Manawatu Racing Club (Mr J. M. Johnston) informed the Kairanga County Council yesterday that the club proposed to construct a new road from Foxton line to the racecourse parallel with the railway siding, and ashing that the club erect the proposed new bridge at Awapuni sufficiently broad to cope with heavy traffic, as it was hoped the main motor traffic to the racecourse would go entirely by Foxton line. The engineer (Mr Menzies) reported that it was proposed to make the bridge 24 feet broad, but the club would require a SO foot bridge and there might be some difficulty in getting the extra money from the Main Highways Board. Cr. Small thought it would be advisable to write to the board asking it to increase its subsidy because it was no use building a bridge that would not meet full requirements. The engineer said he had not yet forwarded to the Highways Board the bridge plans and specifications, |but would send them down for the 130-foot bridge and explain the roajson for the alteration.
