FOXTON

BOROUGH COUNCIL. [From Our Own Correspondent.] At the monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council held in the Council Chambers last evening there were present: Crs. M. H. Walker (in the chair), (Adams, Parker, Rand, Winstanley, Cowley, Woods, Thompson and McMurray. The Mayor was absent in Dunedin. In discussing the gas works manager’s report, Cr. Winstanley said that comparing the quality of gas in Foxton with that of other towns, he was satisfied it was the cheapest in the Dominion. Mr W. Neville, water and drainage foreman, reported that the laying of sowers in the South side of Avenue road had been completed, and the staff is now engaged in laying the sewer in North Avenue, and Norbiton roads, and the whole work would soon be completed. During the month. 1,150,000 gallons of water had been pumped. Accounts amounting to £1055 were passed for payment. The tender of Mr P. J- Jack for 400 upholstered seats for the Town Hall was accepted, not less than 50 a week to be delivered. Mr Huntley;, jroads (foreman, reported that to put a cutting through the hill in Brown street, .1000 yards of sand would need to be removed, and with the necessary faclning. the cost would be about £BS. A letter was ta'so received (from Mr Hobbs, regarding the opening up of Nye street, It was decided to leave the matter of Brown and Nye streets in abeyance for the present. Application was received from the Coloscum Cash Stores to erect a benzine pump in Main street. In view or probable early regulations in regard to dangerous goods, the application was held over, A leter was received from the Sports Protection League regarding daylight saving. It was decided by five votes to four, not to suppo.t the measure. Crs. Cowley, WlnI Stanley. Adams and McMurray voted for, and Crs. Walker, Thompson, Woods, Rand and Parkin against. The Town Clerk was instructed to write to the Manawatu County Council stating it was the Intention of the Foxton Council to asphalt certain streets in the Borough, the boundaries of which were under the dual control of the County and Borough, and to state the latter body was willing to contribute its share of the cost or asphalting these boundary roads; also to ask the Council if it was prepared to pay its share, or to arrange for its portion to be done, and If so, when.
