EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE
MANAWAXU BRANCH. The annual meeting of the Alanaivatu branch of the flew Zealand Educutional institute was held in the Technical bchool on Saturday, Air. A. VV. Thompson presiding. The chairman expressed his pleasure at the fact that the branch had begun the year in such a satislactory position, its membership has increased and the finances were on the right Side. The credit tor this success lay largely with the secretary, Mr. G. H, Espiner, who had the alfaira of the Institute very niuu at heart. Aleotings had been adaressed by Messrs. D. W. Tow, L. F. de Berry and I). Mcllwraith, ana he suggested the arranging of similar lectures from outside members this year. Complimentary reference was also made to the strong position of the branch by Air. de Berry in seconding the adoption of the report and balance sheet. The new ollice-bearers were elected as under:-—-President, Aliss G. Haggitt; vice-president, Air. J. A. Galland; hon. secretary and treasurer, Air G. H. Espiner; auditor, Air. A. W. Thompson; committee of management, Alisses Chapman and Tarrant, Messrs, de Berry," F. G. Gabltes, G. K. Hamilton and W. A. Swinbourn; delegates to central committee, Aliss Haggitt, Alessrs. Swinbourn, de Berry and secretary* delegate to conference. Air. de Berry. Mr. B. T. N. Blake was nominated as president of the N.Z.E.I, and the appointment of an advocate before the teachers’ appeal court was left to the central executive. Letters were road trom the Institute headquarters, seeking assistance in drawing up a statement with cases In point .regarding the npn-appolnt-ment of teachers to positions secured by others junior on the grading list In commenting on this, Mr. Espiner said that fortunately few complaints had been received last year, but the grading bst was not the factor it should be in the making of appointments.
The Institute also sought an expres-] sion of opinion as to whether the remote allowance was satisfactory. The central executive is to be asked to investigate. Air. Espiner also referred to the fact that teachers’ house allowances had now been recognised as salary for the purpose of superannuation. On the motion of Air Swinbourn. an expression of the realisation of the work of Sir James Parr during his six years as Alinlster of Education, was carried.
