POLLY AND THE CRACKERS,

Polly had not been In bed very long when she heard something rustling near the door. It sounded like paper crackling! After listening a moment Polly suddenly turned on the light,

“There now—caught!” whispered a voice.

Polly rubbed her eyes twice, because she thought she must be dreaming; but no, there it was, standing near the door! It was a big, red paper cracker, with thin arms and legs, and a smiling face which looked

very much as if it had been painted on.

“Polly and the Crackers. "A whole boxful of Crackers t ried to pull her out of bed.” 888 8 8 8 “Go away,” said Polly, “you have no business to be here." "My dear,” grinned the cracker, "I’ve come for you. But what a pity you awoke!” “Come for me!” gasped Polly. “Yes, we’re having a party,” replied the cracker, “and we thought it would be nice to pull you in the same way as you pulled us all through the party season. But this did not appeal to Polly at all. She gripped the bed clothes when, to her horror, a whole boxful of crackers tried to pull her out of bed. "No. I won’t come, said Polly, struggling hard. Then the crackers called their friends.

Iced cakes, jellies, tarts, creams, sandwiches and biscuits all crowded round Polly. They pulled her out of bed, and a fierce tug-of-v.yr began. “Mother!" screamed Polly. Mother entered the room, and they all vanished!

"Indigestion," said mother. “You were greedy at the party, Polly, let this be a lesson to you.” "No more three-helpings of everything,"- vowed Polly snuggling down In bed. "I thought they’d pull me in half!” ;
