Jones (8) 40-33; Miss Williams and Miss Brown won by default. Ladies champion singles: Mrs Bovis defeated Miss Sinclair 9-4 Mrs Morgan defeated Mrs Merwood 9-0, Miss Williams defeated Mrs Conquest 9-4. Men’s champion singles; Aim defeated Pope 8-1, 8-1, Quarrle defeated Bovis 6-1, 6-0, Hunt defea«ted Roach 6-0, 6-3; Aim defeated Priaid 6-3, 6-5; Hunt defeated Walden 6-4, 6-5; Aim defeated Hook. The following pupils of Miss Mona Neale were successful in the London College of Music examination:, Intermediate division: Doris Hook, (piano) Nance Ewan Balfour, 84; (cello). Ele. xnentary division; Jose Thomson (honours) 90, (cello); Lillian Wotton 84, (piano). Shannon Bridge. The following telegram has been received from Mr. J. Linklater M. P. Plans for the new bridge are now completed and will be submitted to the Highways Board on Thursday and then to the local bodies concerned. who will carry out the actual construction. The Mayor Resigns. Mr. W. Murdoch who has occupied the position o r f Mayor of Shannon since its creation as a Borough some nine years ago, has been compelled, owing to ill-health to relinquish the office; the resignation to take effect from March 9th.. Mr. Murdoch’s resignation will necessitate a by-election which will take place within 26 days from the date of his resignation. A public meeting has been called for Friday March Bth for the purpose ot arranging a send-off to Mr. Murdoch. It is also the intention of the Borough Councillors and staff to tender him a social evening bn March 2nd.. Dame rumour has it that the following are likely aspirants for the chief citizen’s Job: Messrs E. J. S. Spencer, J. W. Murray and A. Hyde.
Borough Council. At the usual fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council, there were > present: Mr. W. Murdoch (Mayor), Messrs. Butt, Curran, Roberts Thwaltes, Hook, Spencer, Downes and Richardson. The secretary of the Shannon Chamber of Commerce wrote stating that it had been suggested that arrangements be made through the member (Mr. J. Idnklater for a military camp to be held In Shannon and .as to whether the Council would ■grant the use of the - Recreation ground for drilling purposes. Already
the use of the Druids' Hall has been promised free of charge for a fortnight, for the purpose of lectures and other occasions. A motion that every assistance. A motion that cess of the camp was carried. Permission was granted the Shannon Athletic Society to use the Rec reation grounds for a sports meeting, on Saturday, March 27th. Plunket Society. The Committee of the Plunket Society has made arrangements for the coming baby carnival. Dance on Tuesday evening next — street stall on March Gth and 20th. Mr. C. Easton was appointed secretary for the Farmers’ candidate amd Mrs. Thwaltes for the Town baby.
