“THE VANISHING RACE”

ZANE GREY’S TRIBUTE TO THE SCREEN VERSION OF HIS GREATEST BOOK. Just before leaving America to come to New Zealand Zane Grey made the following statement:— - “I have just come back from one of the Paramount Hollywood studios after seeing on the screen for the first time the newly completed version of my story ’The Vanishing American” (‘The Vanishing American' comes to the screen under the title ‘the Vanishing Race.’) The picture was greater than the story. What more could an author say? Words, no matter hbw skilfully assembled, could never touch the gorgeous beauty of the scenes that unfolded before me this morning. The first sweeping view of the Monument Valley made me home-sick. There is the strength of the movement of real objects that cannot be .equalled by cold print. “My admiration for the ability of .Lucien Hubbard, who supervises the production of all my works for Paramount, la increased tenfold. I went to see this picture in a more critical state of mind than on any other occasion, because it lies particularly close to my heart. The months, the 'brave hand of players,, camera men and technical workers spent in the wild country of Arizona were not wasted. No man could have given a stronger or more beautiful portrayal of the Indian hero than Richard Dix. Lois Wilson, Noah Beery, Malcolm McGregor —all were just the people I pictured In my mind when I wrote the story."
