WEEK TO OVERCOME FINANCIAL FEAR
Deputies Reluctant to Balance Budget
APPEAL TO BRIAND FOR REDUCED TAXES
France’s financial premier has a week in which to avert a political crisis. Brland has either to turn over a minority of 277 on a tax on certain payments; or > to reduce it os a sop to the chamber, a coarse he Is apparently reluctant to adopt.

The Senate .Committe’s effort to repair the Chamber’s financial havoo leads to the belief that the necessary taxes will be sanctioned within a week or the Government will resign.
The latter eventuality is unlikely, although nobody can explain how M. Brland can sway the Chamber. Everybody is forcib'y Impressed by the nas’y shock to the franc, caused by the reluctance of tho Chamber to balance the Budget.
The Chamber’s finance committee pleaded with M. Brland t’o reduce the tax on payments as a sop to the Chamber, while it was still producing ample revenue.
There Is a general desire to avoid a crisis.
A Paris message on Monday read
A position with most Interesting possibilities has arisen in connection wth M. Doumer’s Finance Bill, which the Senate is expected to return tactfully to the .Chamber, embodying all Its original taxation proposals, includ’ng the tax on payments which the Chamber threw out by 389 votes to 112. The conversion of such a hostile .majority is regarded as most difficult but M. Briand. Is expected to make it a question of confidence in the hope of gaming a majority from the opposite side.
