FOXTON TENNIS CLUB

PROGRESSIVE MOVE. [From Our Own Correspondent.] A well-attended meeting of the Club was held in the rest room on Tuesday evening. • Mr. R. McMurray was voted to the chair, Mr. C. Simmons (president) being absent. The meeting was called to receive a report from the committee in respect to a site for new courts. Tl(e secretary read the minutes of the annual general meeting dealing w(ith the authority given,, the committee to arrange for a enw site. He reported the stops which had been fallen in this matter. An exchange of the present two courts for a section of land on which 'there was ample room for six courts had been arranged.

The chairman pointed out that it was for this meeting to endorse the action of the committee. He considered the new site a particularly 'good one and the terms of the exchange advantageous to the Club. The present two courts were quite inade. quate and did not allow the Club to progress as it would otherwise do. There was not room to lay down more courts and the present ones need in the vicinity of £IOO spent on them to bring them into good playing order. The same amount spent on the new site would practically pay the cost of laying down six courts, removing the pavilion and wire-netting and installing conveniences, etc. The committee were emphatic about the new site and considered it was the best possible section in Foxton for tennis courts. It was central, the soil was aslo as good as anything that could be got. It was sheltered from every,, wind and was open to all light, as it was bounded on the North and West by public streets. On the north also there was a nice sloping terrace which would be a natural grandstand, nearly in the centre of which was a bay which would be an excellent place for the pavilion. The whole lent itself to beautifying and with the enthusiastic help of members, this could not only be made one of the best courts in the Dominion, but one of the beauty spots of Foxton as well. There was every prospect of the new courts being 'ready for play at the beginning of next season. The use of the present courts had been arranged for til) the end of this season.

A motion that the committee’s action be endorsed was carried unanimously. The secretary reported that he had received a price for the ploughing of the new site, the chairman pointing out that this should be done immediately. The general committee was appointed to deal with the laying down of the courts and to arrange finance. A project for raising funds was discussed and it was agreed that as the town committee set up in November last were intending to carry out their intention to hold a monster art union to raise funds for swimming baths and sports purposes that the Club leave this matter for further consideration at a general meeting to be held on March 9. urer, Mr. Caughley, who has filled this position having been transferred to Wellington. Messrs. Warwick and W. Koss were elected to the committee. The secretary reported that the Bulls Club were sending a team to Foxton to play for the Newman Cup on March 6. The Foxton team would be picked from the following:—Bryant, Proctor, N. Ross, R. MtMurray, W. Ross, H. Ross, W. Roach, D. McMurray, R. Warwick, Misses Owen, Perreau. Barker, Perryman, Stevenson, Walsh, Mesdames McMurray and Eruera. A vote of thanks to the chair was by acclamation.
