WOODVILLE SHOW
Splendid Cattle Exhibits RAIN INTERFERES WITH ATTENDANCE i It was unfortunate for the opening of the Woodville A. and P. Show yesterday that the weather was not more propitious. The rain that threatened in the morning commenced to fall about mid-day, gradually increasing in volume till the gates wer,e closed. The prospects for the second day, however, are much brighter. The entries show a slight increase on last year. The strongest section, both numerically and in point of quality, was undoubtedly the Jersey cattle. Here was stalled the butterfat champion of the Empire, Mr. W. T .Williams' (Te Aute) Holly Oak Annie. This cow, and anotheb of Mr. Williams’ named Viola’s Queen Bess, which secured the championship of her class, were a centre of attraction throughout the day. These champions were backed up by many other notable Jerseys from I the herds of such well-known breeders as R. I>. Horn (Ohau) and W. H. Booth and Son (Carterton). The dairy cattle section was also a strong one, and included some notable pedigree cows. Southdowns dominated the sheep classes, the exhibits being true specimens of the breed, particularly the champion ewe. Fat sheep suitable for freezing purposes were well represented, the breeders being mostly district farmers. Horses were not much in evidence yesterday, only the light harness classes and ponies being judged. The heavier breeds were not due for judging until to-day. There are the customary side shows and a snuill but representative display of motor vehicles, all of which add to the attraction of the exhibition.
