SHANNON

[From Our Own Correspondent] Bowling Notes. On Thursday night a start was made with the rink competition under electric light. There was an entry ot 8 rinks, which may be considered entirely satisfactory as they all represented Shannon, no outside rinks participating. The conditions were anything but pleasant, there being a drizzle the whole of the evening. It was hoped to have played 3 games, but only two were got off. Results of the evening’? play were; —E. Speneer. Quarrie, and Gagllardl 2 wins each, Jones, Gunning, 1 win, 1 loss. B. Spencer, Knowles. Bovis, 2 losses. Th e following' will represent Shannon against Levin for the Kinnlburg feathers: E. Spencer (skip), Bovis. Newton, Whibley. Other teams are; Brann, Cronquest, Bartholomew. Murral (skip). Aim, Watterston, Jones, Knowles (skip). White, Ward,, Morgan, B. Spencer (skip). The club’s selectors are now arranging for the strongest rinks to try conclusions bo as to pick a strong team for the Dixon Cup to be played for on Saturday week. Busy Scene. Shannon had the appearance of a busy town on Thursday, there being about 20 cars parked outside the Council Chambers, the occasion being the hearing of evidence before the Land Board Commission. School Committee.

At a special. meeting of the School Committee, there were present:— Messrs. Tippler (chair), Brann, Blqckwood, Burns, Lankshear, Brown, Roberts, Philip and the headmaster, A. T. White. The business of the meeting was a discussion on the replacing of one of the class-rooms which had been condemned. The Board’s architect vas of opinion that there was ample room on a 12ft. basis in the school to accommodate the children. The chairman pointed out that the position was that Standard 111 room had been condemned and they were now stuck for accommodation. The headmaster was of the opinion that the closing of the room would cause inconvenience. It would be impossible to arrange the classes.

Mr. Blackwood said that if it were impossible to arrange the classes that the inspector be telegraphed to and asked to visit the school immediately On the chairman’s motion, It was decided tio close the room, ps instructed. Athletic Club. At a meeting held on Wednesday night, it was decided to form an Athcltic Club. Some years ago there was a strong club in Shannon, but owing to epidemics and other causes, it was allowed to lapse. The following officers were elected: —President, J. T. Bovis; vice-president, R. E. Downes; management committee: Messrs. J. Gray, D. McLaggan, D. Sands Sinclair, Watkins, Caldwell, Satherley, Quarrie, Murdoch, Johnson and Blrohall; programme committee: G. Watkins, G. Caldwell, Dr. Mackereth, L. Satherley, H. Robinson; secretary, T. Kohika; treasurer, Dr, Mackereth. A strong committee was set up to arrange evening sports which it is pro-

posed to hold fortnightly in the Domain, which now has the electric light installed. Personal. Mr. C. Jennings, who has been on a tour of the South Island, has returned to Shannon. c Mr. W. Quarrie has disposed of his business and will leave for Australia at an early date. Mesdames Franks and Balfour, who have been on a visit to the Exhibition, returned homo on Tuesday. Mr. W. Murdoch (Mayor), whose health has been again causing anxiety, has gong to New Plymouth for a few days. Mrs. A. Freeman and children left on Friday (yesterday) for Wellington to catch the Marama :or Sydney. Mr. Freeman intends to follow later and take up residence in that city. Miss Mona Neale, who has been spending her vacation in the South, returned to Shannon on Thursday. Mrs. A. 11. Morgan, who has been holiday-making in th Ranglwahia district, has returned home. Tennis. The Mangaore Tennis Club held a doubles tourney during the week, a most enjoyable time . being spent. Most of the games were very evenly contested, the winners being Mrs. Hutton and Mr. H. Wood. Mr. T. A. Johiiston presented the prizes and congratulated the winners. Afternoon lea was provided by the ladies.
