MODERN BOY A FINE FELLOW

DULLER scholars who SUCCEED, LONDON, Dec. 15. Dr. Cyril Norwood, Master of Marlborough College, Wiltshire, who is succeeding the Rev. Lionel Ford (DeanDesignate of York) as the headmaster of Harrow School, said to a Dail> Mail” reporter. The modern boy is a fine fellow. You can trust him far more than you can trust the modern man. "Unfortunately the war has affected his nerves. There is something subtly wrong with the nerves of the boy born during the war. The nerves of the boy born after the war, who will be arriving at school in 1927, will be even worse, I am afraid. He will have to be handled carefully.’* BU’cli Out of Fashion.

Dr. Norwood thinks th e boy of today is so much mor e civilised than his father was that the birch is going out of fashion. He said:

” ‘Swishing’ is brutal—a relic of the more barbarous public schools of the nineteenth century. Caning is quite severe enough. I am sure that ’swishing’ will soon be altogether a thing of the past. “I dp not know if it is still done at Harrow. If it is I shall have to think very seriously about it.”

Talking of the success of boys, he said:

“It is a curious thing that boys who reach positions of eminence in school often do not succeed so wbil in after life. At the age of twenty-three the boys who woic below them in school have drawn level. At thirty they are in front. “The boy who develops slowly may succeed • better than the boy who roaches his climax at school.” Harrow Testimonials. Harrow School is preparing to give the Rev. Lionel Ford a good send-off when ho leaves at the end of the term on December 21. Subscriptions to a boys’ testimonial fund are being limited to £1 each. There are 644 boys, and a motor-car is being suggested- as a suitable present. In addition there will be a testimonial from th e masters and probably one from the school staff.
