Decrease in Butler, Small Cheese Increase

BUTTBRFAT PRODUCTION DOWN 8% PER CENT,

Figures of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture show that salted butter graded for January, 1926, totalled 8213 tons, and unsalted 401 tons, a total of 8614 tons. com. pared with 9788 tons salted and 625 tons unsalted, a total of 10,413 tons for January last year, a decrease of 17.2 per cent. For the six months ended January, 1926, the respective quantities were 39,073 tons and 2323 tons, a total of 4,1,396 tons, compared with 45,289 tons and 2706 tons ,a total of 47,996 tons, for the corresponding period of the preceding season, a decrease of 13.7 per cent. Cheese graded for January, 1926, comprised white 6918 tons and coloured 3487- tons, a total of 10,405 tons, compared with 6889 tons white and'336B tons coloured, a total of 10,257 tons, for January, 1925, this being an increase of 1.4 per cent.

The quantities for the six months ended January, 1926, were white, 28,501 tons, coloured, 14,377 tons, a total of 43,878 tons, compared with ; 27,134 tons white and 14,728 tons 'cf coloured, totalling 4.1,857 tons for the corresponding period of the preceding season/involving an increase of 4.8 per cent.

In converting these figures Into butterfat equivalent, there is a decrease of 8.4 per cent In butterfat production for the six months, as compared with the corresponding period of the 1924-25 season. Stocks held in various grading ports at January 31, 1926, were butter: 9070* tons, cheese 9390 tons.
