THE ONWARD MARCH Although it may seem inconceivable to the younger generation, the time was when the Rangitikei Street business area ended at Harry Palmer's Auction Mart, the remainder of the street being for the most part overgrown with grass. But nothing can stop the March of Progressand- keeping company with the growth of the town, this Avenue of Commerce has developed imtil at the present day it is the “Hub” of the city. Old residents have seen many changes and advances for the most part beyond their most fervent anticipation. The next decade should witness further changes, probably beyond the utmost expectations of those who are associated with the present development of the city. With the coming of the Deviation and the new Railway Station, this thoroughfare will be the main entrance to the town, and therefore the best business site. Among the many changes commercially should be mentioned the recent acquisition of the business of Spooner & Co. by Harvey Office Supplies Limited. This business only assistant at that time was his daughter The location was first established in 1910 by Mr. C. P. Spooner, whose was for some years in Coles’ Building, but owing to these premises being found inadequate a move was made to Rangitikei Street to premises owned by Bett & Bayly Ltd Soon these offices were found to be too small, and then Mr. Spooner embarked on a bold venture, that of building, his own business block opposite Grey Street. Here the business has been developed by the adapting of modem business methods, and to-day it stands in the front rank for Printing, Stationery, Typewriters* and Office Equipment of all kinds. The present staff numbers nine. Many years of business life have left their stamp on Mr. Spooner, who has now reached the retiring age. The business has therefore been acquired by the newly-formed company of which Mr. H. R. Harvey is Managing Director. Mr Harvey has for the past eleven years worked on the staff of H. L. Young Ltd., and for some time prior to his resignation occupied the position, of Assistant Manager. He has had considerable experience in the various departments which Comprise the business and should, by maintaining the same service as in the past, secure for his firm the same measure of success as has rewarded the efforts of 0. F. Spooner and Co.
