DAIRY PRODUCE
PRICES IMPROVE IN EAST FORTNIGHT. COMPANIES HOLDING SUPPLIES. “Dairy produce prices at Home have improved during the last fortnight, and butter is now quoted at from 174/- to 176/- per cwt.,” remarked a local dairy company secretary in the course of a conversation with a "Chronicle” reporter yesterday. He added that the general opinion some time back was that / prices in January were going to be very low. owing to the heavy arrivals at Home. This contention, however, had been disproved, and the rise was apparently due to the fact that many factories were holding their butter instead of allowing it to go on the mar., ket. The quantities held were not known, but the factories that had adopted this course of action had assisted to keep the market firm. With a lower production all round, it appeared as though the bottom prices had been reached. The informant explained that he personally had been under the impression that butter would drop to 150/- per cwt. The fact that prices In the Old Country had maintained such a satisfactory figure during January inclined one to think that the market would steddlly improve from now onwards. The arrivals, it had to be remembered, would not be as heavy in the succeeding few months as they had been in previous years. Cheese prices had also been satis, factorlly maintained, and latest advice quoted white at 101/- to 102/per cwt, and coloured at from 104/to 106/- per cwt.
