ESCAPE OF GAS
CAUSES TERRIBLE EXPLOSION. BERLIN STREET DESTROYED. [By Electric Cable—Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.) BERLIN, January 18. A shattering detonation, due to an explosion of gas and petrol, aroused the residents of the • Moabit district of Berlin early this morning.
A four-storeyed house collapsed like a pack of cards, burying the occupants under eight feet of debris.
The whole street was the scene of wild destruction. A motor-car was hurled some distance away and smashed to pieces. All the windows In the neighbourhood were broken, the window frapies hanging in the street fronts. The fire brigades, working feverishly, were threatened every moment by further collapses of loosened masonry. The explosion was caused by an escape Of gas, which became Ignited, the flames spreading to a chandler’s shop, where they set fire to a barrel of benzine. One house that was destroyed was inhabited by 25 families. Forty persona have so far been extricated from the ruins. Of these five were dead and 20 seriously injured.
