LAWBREAKERS AND OTHERS DEALT WITH. The first regular sitting for the year of the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday when Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., dealt with a large list of holiday-time offences. A fine of £8 and costs amounting to £l/11/- was Imposed on Robert Charles Andrew who appeared on a charge of indecent exposure in a railway carriage at Linton on September 2G. Because he neglected to register under the Defence Act, Robert Cory was mulcted in £B and costs 7/-. Octavlan Orlando Glorgl, who failed to notify the Defence authorities of his change of address, was fined £J and 7/-. Frank Drury failed to return certain articles of clothing Issued to him as a member of the Senior cadets, the value being £l/1/-. He was also charged with failure to render personal service. On the first count he was ordered to pay £l/1/- or return the articles and on the second, he was mulcted in £1 and costs 7/-. Charles John Ernstrom was charged that he did deliver possession of a rifle to C. W. Ernstrom, who was not entitled to have. possession of It. He was further charged with having possession of an unregistered rifle. Fines of 10/- and 7/- costa were imposed in respect to both charges. Two charges of obtaining liquor during the currency of a prohibition order were preferred against Mark Comber and one for being found on licensed premises after hours. He was fined £1 and costs 7/- on each c£ the first two charges, the third being withdrawn. \ i ■ Theft of Cycle. George. Travers alias W. H. Watson alias Ernest Watson, pleaded guilty io stealing a bicycle, valued at £6/10/. on November 19. 1924, the property ol Joseph Boucher. Sergeant Power stated that accusod had bought the bicycle on the instalment system and had paid down 30/, agreeing to pay off 15/- a week. He had made only one, payment of 10/- . before pledging the machine to a pawnbroker ' for’ £2 and later the cycle was sold for £3/15/-. Eventually the machine came into tha hands of the police and defendant was arrested at Napier, where he had been committed to the Supreme Court oil ether charges. His wife had in thq meantime paid £B/10/- off the amount owing, so actually there was only £1 to be paid. The bench ordered accused to come up for sentence If called upon within six months, the £1 to be paid within three months. Motor Accident Sequel. Charged with driving a motor car in a manner dangerous to the public at Rangiotu on December 6. William George Benning pleaded not guilty. Mr Cooper appearing foe defendant Robert Hall, driver of the FoxtonPalmerston North char-a-banc, gave evidence that on the date under review, when reaching the, Rhngiotu bridge, he espied a motor car approaching from the opposite direction. Witness was well on to the bridge when the other car .after appearing to pull up at the approach, Continued Its journey and came on, tp the bridge with the result that a collision occurred. Witness had gqno about 50 feet on the bridge and at the time of the impact was practically at a standstill Frederick Penny, railway shunter, who was a passenger on the bus, ga,ve corroborative evidence.

Defendant, in the box, stated that 'he considered he was first on the bridge and so had the right-of-way. When the Impact occurred he was almost at a standstill, having applied bis foot brake and turned off the benzine. The vehicles met head on end had the bus been on the proper side, witness's car would only have been damaged on the side. The Magistrate believed that defendant was to blame for the mishap and Imposed a fine of £5, with costs amounting to £l/18/-. / Dog Attacks Boy. *

The question of the ownership of a black dog was raised in the case in vvhivh Bousle Turner, described aa a c’rovel, was charged with being the owner of a dog that, on November 1, had attacked Ronald Christensen. Dofendant pleaded not guilty and was represented by Mr Ongley. The father of the complainant stated that his eon was brought home suffering from injuries to the face indicted bv a dog and had to receive medical attention.

Evidence of the attack by the animal was given by complainant who stated that he had not given provocation

Mrs Ethel Jane Richard disposed to having seen the boy bitten by the dog, which had previously been worked by defendant in trailing cattle to the yards. .Witness had taken the boy to his parents. She had been visited by defendant's brother, who came «ith two dogs, neither of which the one that attacked the lad. Defendant, in the witness box, stated that he did not own a black dog with a white breast, which was said to have made the attack. He was only using two dogs at the timel of the incident and neither was as described. The Magistrate remarked that there was always some difficulty in establishing ownership in such cases as this, but ordered that defendant pay the costs of the medical attention, and that he destroy the dog. No fine was imposed. Maintenance Orders. An order was made against William Percy Old for the payment of 5/- a week towards the maintenance of his two step-children, the first payment to be made on January 25. Francis Dominic O'Connor was . ordered to pay 10/- a week towards the upkeep of his child Separation, maintenance and guardianship orders were made against Ernest NesMt Browne, who was ordered to pay his wife £l/10/- a week and 18/- fov each of his two children. Costs amounted to £3/3/-,
