HABITUAL CRIMINAL AT LARGE
ESCAPE FROM MT. EDEN. LARGE POSSE IN' PURSUIT. [For Press Association.] AUCKLAND Last Night. Up to a late hour to-night, a habitual criminal, Pene Karaiaklore, a Maori aged 36, who escaped from the ouarry at Mount Eden prison this morning, had not been recaptured. Pene Is reported to have been making off along Auburn road. In front of the gaol towards the Khyber Pas*. The el arm was given and a large partyt of warders set cut after the escapee. They were reinforced by five policemen from the city station and officers from substations. The trail led to the Eomaln< where Pene Is reported to have been sighted. The area and its surroundings were scoured, but the Maori was no* discovered. Later, howler, he was seen further afield, going in the direction of Oraket. Pene was sentenced to two years’ hard labou nid declared an habitual criminal In X'ebruary, 1924, on charges of breaking, entering and theft at Auckland.
