BOROUGH COUNCIL.
[From Our Own Correspondent.] At the first meeting since the holidays of the Shannon Borough Council there wore present. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. W. Murdoch), Crs. Butt, Curren, Thwaites, Downes, Spencer. Hook and Richardson. The Department of Lands and Survey wrote stating that re railway c’ocsing between Balance and Bryce streets, advising that plans prspared in 1885 by Messrs Palmerston and Scott for the Manawatu Railway Ccenpany Limited do not show a crossing. All available records of the Department and the Land Transfer Office had been searched and no crossing le Indicated at this point The public and residents of Shannon have been in the habit of crossing the railway linos from Ballanca street to Bryce street, but witnin the last few weeks the Railway Depart, ment have issued a notice to the ofi feet that all trespassers will be prosecuted. ■> This is a hardship on tu* residents of Bryce street who are now, forced 'to cover an extra quarter «•* a mile to reach the main street • In reply to a request from the Council that they will be allowed to remove the dividing fence between the Council Chambers and the Post Office a distance of 18 Inches In order to provide a right of way to the rear oj the Council’s premises. The Chief Postmaster stated that it would appear from correspondence between the Council and Public Works Department that this strip of land would be lequlrod permanently. In view of this fact he wished to inform them that they may have the portion required until such time as it is required by the P. and T. Department.—lt was resolved to write and agree to those terms. The Town Clerk reported that £2l/12/- had been received from the Post and Telegraph Department aa compensation for damage done to the footpaths while the cables were being laid. j s Bowling.

Arrangements are now being made tc hold a big dance in the Parish Hall on the 22nd. January.
