WATER FOR LIVE STOCK

Provision of a deaf water supply is an important item in farm economy for ensuring the health and- cfo ' tlness of stock of all kinds. W/iere a good stream of running Water is available special measures and Precautions are not always so necessary but even in this' case the danger' of cattle and sheep getting various forms of worm infestation is always present, especially In wet weather.

Where water has to be pumped into a reservoir or is merely an accumulation in dams of surface rainfall the same danger also exists, unless measures are taken that will enable the stock to drink' from troughs that cab be emptied and kept clean. Owing to the necessity for the careful conservation of water pumped from boreholes and its storage in properly bfilt reservoirs, provision has often to bo made for leading the drinking supply into troughs or other receptacles, the result of which Is, provided the water is not atlowed to be fouled or splashed over to forip muddsT pools in the vicinity, that, stock are not nearly so subject to parasitic infection of the kind mentioned. The precautions, that should be taken for ensuring clean water supplies to the ordinary herds and flocks running on a farm are also necessary for the other farm stock, such as Calves, pigs and poultry which are dependent for the most part on the personal attention of their owners for their needs In this direction. This attention, too often, is not distinguished by any particular regard to cleanliness either of the water supply or the receptacles in which it is given. The pig, popularly supposed to be an unclean animal In its tastes and habits, is usually fed and watered In,accordance with that tiadition, thus doing violence to the pig’s real feelings, and making for bad health and bad bacon. *'
