NOTES OF THE DAY
The first -matches of the second round of the Pellding and District, Cricket Association’s competition will open on Kowhai Park this afternoon. A youthful fisherman named Hosken, aged 13 i years, made a good catch in the Makino stream on Thursday afternoon when he landed a fine specimen of an c-el, which was four feet long and weighed 1411bs. The boy had been amusing himself about the stream which is at present very low and noticed the eel which he decided to capture. Several attempts made previously to Thursday's expedition proved unsuccessful and armed with a fork, the boy stalked his prize until he was able to say “mine” with certainty. The boy produced his capture to his parents, who were more than surprised at the size of the fish. Hoskon is a pupil of the Lytton street school.
The hot, muggy weather experienced in Pelldlng yesterday was very trying and although a few spots of rain fell, the expected downpour did not materialise. The state of the sky and the atmosphere suggest heavy rain and the country badly needs It.
