THAT SHINING SUN

Though the sun is over ninety-two and a-quartcr million miles from this earth of ours, astronomers have taught us a lot about It. For instance, we know of what it is composed. It is described as a liquid mass,, enveloped by a luminous atmosphere. Over this atmosphere various metals and other elements give out dense vapours. Many attempts have been made to employ the vast heat of the sun as a motive power. , As early as 1860 a Frenchman named Mouchot constructed a boiler in which water might be distilled by the aid of Old Sol. Eight years later an apparatus was made by which the condnsed rays of the sun might be used to work various fnaohinery. It was, however, a failure. In 1880, Mr. Mouchot actually drove an engine by the aid of the sun’s rays collected by a mirror, but the cost of working his Invention was too great. Since then various other attempts have been made to use th e sun to work machinery, and no doubt a practicable apparatus will soon be invented.
