DOCTOR AND COLLECTOR
"I should have been hero long: before this,” said the visitor, as ho entered the doctor’s consulting room: "but you know how those things get put off!” Here he was seized with a fit of coughing. "A nasty cough," said doctor, critically; "but not, 1 think, serious.” ”1 Just came round ” resumed the stranger. But the doctor cut him short.
"Say no more,” he said. t "I understand your case perfectly. Just puff out your chest and say ‘ninety-nine’ in a deep voice.” “It’s all right, doctor,” said the visitor. “That cough comes from too much smoking. But what I have to say is 'nine and ninepence.’ That’s the amount* you owe the gas company, and I’m jthelr collector!”
