CHILLED OR FROZEN BEEF

A (MEAT BOARD MEMBER’S OPINION. OPTIMISTIC REGARDING PRICES. The proposal to send chilled beef from New Zealand to the English markets is not favoured by Mr. J. C. N. Grigg, of Longboach, Canterbury, who returned from England by tho Remuera recently. Mr. Grigg who is a member of tho Now Zealand Meat Export Control Board, stated that when chilled beet arrived at Home it would have to be distributed very quickly. This would be imperative on account of the long sea journey. On the other hand, frozen boot could be distributed in ah parts of the United Kingdom. New Zealand lamb was becoming moro popular every day in England. Light, to medium weights were preferred to the heavier. He had every reason to believe that the prices for beef would remain a little firmer. With tho idea of strengthening his flock of Southdown sheop, Mr. Grigg purchased some valuable stock. However, just before he left England there was an outbreak of foot and mouth disease, and he was proventd from bringing them hero by the New Zealand authorities. One of the rams had been leased to the Royal stud farm for 100 guineas. Ho had tho offer of three other rams and one prize ewe in the hope that tho restrictions would noon be lifted. Reference was made by Mr. Grigg to the value of tho Southdown for export as frozen mutton. The Southdown, he said, was the best sheep for such a purpose, and by importing good stock for breeding the flocks could be improved greatly.
